Pumpkins line the wall behind the bar

Just three months after Beetle House opened on H Street NE, D.C.’s only year-round Halloween bar has already passed beyond the veil.

A message posted to the bar’s D.C. website now says that it’s “closed for business,” and prompts interested parties to visit the New York and Los Angeles locations. Beetle House opened in late September, and was meant to be a “place for anyone who is into horror culture and punk rock,” owner Zach Neil told DCist at the time.

The closure was first reported on Twitter by Barred in D.C. DCist has reached out Neil for comment.

The bar has been embroiled in controversy basically from its inception, after Neil made several comments to DCist sharing some incorrect ideas about D.C. nightlife. “Everything in D.C. kind of turns off at 7 o’clock at night,” he said at the time. “After the monuments, there’s not really a lot of options. It’s mostly chain restaurants.”

The backlash on social media, and in other news outlets, was swift.

“Before opening the doors to Beetle House … owner Zach Neil has done everyone in D.C. the favor of showing he knows nothing about D.C.,” wrote Eater D.C. Neil later claimed to the site that his quote was meant to be from the point of view of a tourist in D.C.

Beetle House’s aesthetic was inspired by Tim Burton—it was full of jack-o-lanterns, various taxidermied animals, and light fixtures constructed from skulls and spinal cord bones. The huge purple face of Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas emerged from one wall.

For a $50 fee, patrons got a three course meal and a show full of sword-eaters, contortionists, and other circus performers.

In 2017, Neil opened a pop-up bar in the same location called Stay Classy, a dedication to Will Ferrell.
