FRIDAY, JANUARY 3
FISTICUFFS: In one of D.C.’s weirder traditions, local theater and event group Astro Pop imagines physical bouts between random pop culture figures (think Elton John, a unicorn, or the queen of England) … in honor of Elvis Presley’s birthday. Just how irreverent is Elvis Birthday Fight Club? The King of Rock’s toilet serves as the emcee. (GALA Hispanic Theatre, 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., $28)
TELL ME ABOUT IT: Imagine your most indignant and passionate rant after a few too many drinks, and you’ve got Three Sheets Lecture Series (organizes describe it as “Ted Talks meet Drunk History.”) The evening’s presenters will discuss a diverse array of topics (New Hampshire, the Dyatlov Pass incident, among others) made more fun with a lot of liquid courage. Your $5 donation at the door will go to the Coalition for the Homeless, which provides transitional and permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness. (Dew Drop Inn, 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m., $5 suggested donation)
PARENTS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND: In Eureka Day, a bout of mumps hits a crunchy elementary school in Berkeley that preaches inclusion and consensus decision-making—and where many parents don’t vaccinate their children. Mosaic Theater’s production follows the community debate that comes alongside the school’s health crisis. The play runs through Sunday; Friday’s performance will be shown with open captions. (Atlas Performing Arts Center, 8 p.m., $20-$60)
MORE: Ghost Peppers (Daikaya, 7 p.m., free entry), Park Snakes + Time is Fire + La Colombopercutiva (The Pie Shop, 8 p.m., $10), Jersey Boys (National Theatre, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., $69-$229)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 4
DANCE INTO THE DECADE: BENT, the 9:30 Club’s LGBT dance night, enters its second year this weekend. The theme is—what else?—roaring 20s, and the night will include drag performances, DJ battles, and more. (9:30 Club, doors 10 p.m., $20)
LOOK FOR CLUES: Put those afternoons wandering the city’s museums to use at a scavenger hunt of the Smithsonians, put on by Things to Do. Upon meeting up at Ollie’s Trolley restaurant, participants will be divided into teams, and sent off to museums on the National Mall to pick up special items, take photos, or find answers to trivia questions. The winning team gets free tickets to an upcoming embassy gala. (Ollie’s Trolley, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., $20)
PUCKER UP: Technically, you’re supposed to celebrate a ninth anniversary with willow or pottery, but Bier Baron Tavern is doing things a little differently with its 9 Year Sourversary. They’ll be tapping 20 of their weirdest sour beers for the afternoon, and inviting guests in for timed seatings. (Bier Baron Tavern, seatings between 12 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., free entry, reservations required)
MOVIE TIME: The National Gallery of Art is spending the weekend celebrating late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, known for 1977’s Taste of Cherry and 2010’s Juliette Binoche-starring Certified Copy. The series kicks off with a selection of Kiarostami’s early short films. It’s a diverse slate: One is a playful instructional video to teach children about the color spectrum, another is a black-and-white film set to the Beatles’ “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.” (National Gallery of Art, 2 p.m., FREE)
MORE: Bring Back the 90s New Year Show (DC Arts Center, 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., $15-$18), Le Cabaret de Carmen (Source Theatre, 8 p.m., $31-$56), Georgetown GLOW (Various locations, 5 p.m.-10 p.m., FREE)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 5
DANCE IT OUT: Tis the season for everyone at the gym to performatively whine about how it’s “always sooooo crowded this time of year.” If you’re seeking a workout, skip the gym and just go dance at the Kennedy Center. Sunday’s free Millennium Stage performance is interactive: a zumba session led by instructor Tanya Nichols. (Kennedy Center’s The REACH, 6 p.m., FREE)
FROMAGE, ANYONE? Maybe your resolution was to try new things, or maybe it was to embrace things you already know are delicious. Either way, it might be a good time to join Cheesemonster Studio’s quarterly cheese club, which offers tastings of a few varieties of cheese with pairings. This weekend’s spread includes goat and cow cheeses from Boxcarr Handmade Cheese in North Carolina. (Cheesemonster Studio, 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m., $40-$50)
DIVE IN: Meditating is so 2019: You can make 2020 the year that you unwind via sound bath. D.C. power nap studio Recharj will use singing bowls to produce soothing tones that are said to help you find balance. (Recharj, 4 p.m.-5 p.m., $35)
MORE: The Near Misses (DC Arts Center, 3 p.m., $15-$18), The Boozy Bee (Capital Cider House, 6 p.m., free entry), My Fair Lady (Kennedy Center, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., $49-$169)
