When James Hoban’s Irish Restaurant and Bar closed this past summer, it was the first in a series of bar closures that stung the Dupont Circle neighborhood. Less than six months later, the address has emerged under new ownership as The Admiral, an American bar serving seafood alongside plenty of craft drinks.

The Admiral is the newest project from Mission Group, which operates two Mission locations in Dupont and Navy Yard. Company partner Fritz Brogan says the Dupont Circle neighborhood has long been a target for expansion.

“We love that it’s such a great mix of people,” Brogan says. “Our customers are everything from embassy workers to college students to office workers, so it’s an eclectic, fun crowd.”

Both name and design were inspired by Navy Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, an influential figure in the American Civil War, not to mention in D.C. geography. Although there aren’t margaritas on draft here, fans of Mission will notice some common threads with that popular spot, including string lighting, ample seating and a bar vibe that’s the focal point of the experience.

The food goes for a loose nautical theme, playing off the Navy inspiration and marrying elevated bar fare with coastal ingredients.

“We’re going along the lines of American seafood—New England with touches of Southern,” says chef Roberto Hernandez. “We just decided to make some fun food.”

Highlights include a traditional lobster roll and a shareable jumbo lump crab dip gratin. On the more traditional front, chicken wings get a bourbon barbecue dry rub, and the crispy Brussels sprouts are served with citrus yogurt, spiced pistachio and pickled shallots. The house burger is topped with bacon jam and Gruyère cheese on a brioche bun. Sandwiches and salads run $14 to $23, with entrees between $21 and $29.

“We want something on our menu that appeals to every single person: vegan, gluten free, older, younger, price conscious—whatever it is,” Brogan says.

There are multiple bars throughout the spacious restaurant, including one in the smaller back room that’s also available for private events. Each is well stocked with spirits and beers, including a selection of whiskeys and an exclusive DC Brau Privateer Pils. For a quick drink, grab a Tito’s paloma with ruby red grapefruit, fresh lime juice and simple syrup or a Kentucky lemonade, mixed with Old Forester bourbon, fresh lemon juice, brown sugar simple syrup and triple sec (both are on draft for $11).

Happy hour is also big business in Dupont Circle, and The Admiral will offer up daily deals from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. that should appeal equally to college students looking for a cheap beer or tourists who want to refuel with some snacks. The bar’s happy hour offerings include $5 for a draft beer or shot of bourbon, $7 palomas, half-priced oysters, and a $3.50 beef brisket slider. A separate late-night deal starting at 11 p.m. will feed night owls with bring additional specials plus live DJs.

No matter what time of night, The Admiral’s sprawling space—including its huge outdoor patio come spring and the giant illuminated sign over the entrance—should become a literal beacon to passersby looking for the answer to post-shift drinks, game day bites, or a wild night out.

“We like our places to be for everyone, from someone who is 21 looking to have a couple of shots to someone who is much older and looking for a different environment,” Brogan says.

The Admiral is located at 1 Dupont Circle NW. Open Monday through Thursday 4 p.m.-1 a.m., Friday and Saturday 4 p.m.-3 a.m., and Sunday 4 p.m.-midnight. Brunch coming soon.
