Dig into Jim Henson’s early days at UMD
Did you know Jim Henson is a University of Maryland alum? In honor of the 60th anniversary of his graduation, UMD is presenting a few artifacts from the artist’s time as a student. Inspired! Jim Henson at Maryland includes press clippings, sketchbooks, and television advertisements he produced in D.C. Once you’re done checking out the items, swing by the statue of Henson and Kermit on a bench in the arboretum.

Sing along to Dolly at the Tenleytown Library
Dolly Parton’s Books from Birth program has delivered more than a million free books to D.C. kids since the D.C. Public Library launched the initiative in 2016. This winter, the Tenleytown Library has celebrated Dolly with a film series of her best works—and they’ve saved the weirdest for last. The 1982 musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas stars Dolly as the owner of a brothel in modern day, small-town Texas, and Burt Reynolds plays her secret beau, who’s also the sheriff of the town. It’s campy in the best way, plus it includes Parton performing “I Will Always Love You” and “Hard Candy Christmas”—one of the best weepy Christmas songs we’ve got. If it weren’t obvious from the title, this one’s not for kids.
Tenleytown Library, Saturday, 1 p.m.
Dress inappropriately for the Metro
It’s the return of the annual No Pants Subway Ride when you … well, you get it. Public transit enthusiasts across the country will be riding sans bottoms on Sunday (blame improv comedians for this one). In D.C., participants will meet at Hancock Park near L’Enfant Plaza for a photo, and after the time in transit, gather for a happy hour at Sudhouse on U St. Pants are optional there, too. (Fun fact: this has been going on for more than a decade.)
Hancock Park, Sunday, 3 p.m.-7 p.m.
