Right Proper Brewing Company’s next beer will be designed via Twitter poll.

Right Proper Brewing Co. is readying its next special beer release—but rather than loading it up with unique ingredients like most one-off specials, they’re letting the beer drinkers vote on exactly what’s in the glass.

“I think there’s beer nerds—or whatever they like to be called—and they have one taste, usually very hoppy, high alcohol,” says Raman Santra, who runs the D.C. nightlife blog Barred in D.C. and whose Twitter account is administering the polls on the beer.

His collaborator, Right Proper’s lead brewer Bobby Bump, agrees. “The hot trend is the hazy IPA,” he says.

Their yet-unnamed beer will prove if that’s really the case. The beer will come together over a series of 5-8 Twitter polls shared over the next few weeks. Most of the questions will concern the attributes of the beer inside the glass—including color, texture, and alcohol content—though the name might also be up for a vote. Michael Stein, a beer historian and writer (who has also contributed to DCist) is also helping to design the beer.

A lawyer by day (which explains his pen name), Santra started blogging as Barred in D.C. in 2013, but these days, his Twitter account is where most of the action takes place. He retweets restaurant recommendation requests, points out upcoming bar openings, and muses on industry gossip. Perhaps his most well-known regular bit is his Twitter polls, which seek popular opinion on locals’ favorite bars and restaurant etiquette. Most of the polls, Santra says, get a few hundred votes each over the 4-6 hours he keeps them open.

Unlike those flash polls, Santra plans to wait 48 hours before closing each of these beer queries (though it already seems that might change). The first question, about the beer’s color, has tallied more than 500 votes in four hours since it was posted Monday morning. Voters are currently split between opting for a pale/hazy beer or a copper/ruby brew.

As the votes roll in, Santra says, each question will narrow down to suit the type of beer that’s in the lead—that’s so they don’t end up with a puzzling combination of flavors, like a pale ale with chocolate notes. “I told a couple friends about this and most of them were stoked, but some who were more beer nerds were really worried, like, ‘This is going to be a Frankenbeer!” he says.

Though he says he’s not voting in the polls, Santra’s favorite kind of beer is a saison. He has some guesses which way the votes will go. “My bet its gonna be more of a pale ale clocking in around 6 percent [ABV], with a a little bit of fruit in it,” he says.

Bump has his fingers crossed for quite the opposite. He’s surprised to see a copper/ruby brew creeping to the top of the first poll. “Hops tend to dominate our market,” he says. “Malt gets kind of left behind—this might give those people a chance to speak up.”

We’ll find out who’s right as the polls continue over the next few weeks. The collaborators are targeting March for a launch party.
