Future Sketches is premiering at ARTECHOUSE on Jan. 17

Tati / Artechouse

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17

OPEN BAR: U Street staple Hawthorne is celebrating its fourth year in business—which means you get to drink more. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., if you sign up via this online form, you get to take part in the bar’s complimentary open bar. The venue will also be celebrating its anniversary with a champagne toast. Hurry up and head to that rooftop. (Hawthorne, 9 p.m., free with RSVP)

SILENT DISCO: Quietly kick off your long weekend by donning your headphones and marching to your own beat. Lucky Strike will be providing wireless headphones to anyone who wants to dance solo for its silent disco. As participants dance, different DJs representing different genres and artists will be trying to grab your attention. Which DJ will get the most people dancing? It’s up to you to decide. (Lucky Strike, 9 p.m., $13.50)

SEE INTO THE FUTURE: Artechouse’s latest exhibit opens Friday and invites you to take a look into artwork of the future. Did you know computer code could make something beautiful? Solo artist Zach Lieberman uses creative code to create futuristic drawings in the art gallery’s aptly named Future Sketches art show. As always, expect the art show to be interactive and eclectic. (Artechouse, various times, $8-$16)

MORE: African American & Black History Smithsonian Art Tour (National Portrait Gallery, 4:45 p.m.-6:45 p.m., $10), Don’t Tell Comedy show (location TBA in Chinatown, 7:30 p.m., $20)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 18

YOGA WITH A TWIST: Georgetown’s Lululemon is hosting a HIIT and vinyasa yoga combination class set to Latin hits at its Vibras y Vinyasa event. The store says it’s more than a yoga class: It’s a cultural experience. Patrons can expect to sweat (but not too much—the room won’t be heated). We recommend bringing your own yoga mat, because there will be limited mats available. (Lululemon Georgetown 10:30 a.m., $20)

HAMILTON FEVER: Hamilton is making its triumphant return to the Kennedy Center in June, but if you can’t cough up the dough for tickets, you can still sing along to the historical sensation at Astro Beer Hall. Hamiltunes DC will allow Hamilton-fanatics to raise a glass to freedom (ha, get it) and sing their favorite songs from the musical karaoke-style. Ticket proceeds will go towards the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. (Astro Beer Hall, 6:30 p.m., $17.76)

ROCK THE RINK: Capitals super fans are invited to The Wharf to rock the red on the rink themselves. The Wharf’s Rock The Rink on Saturday is the first of three Capitals-themed skates that the Wharf Ice Rink will host. The events will include Capitals trivia, giveaways, contests, and themed beverages. Caps fans that wear Caps gear will even get $5 off admission to the rink. Finish off a cold afternoon of skating by hunkering by the Wharf’s Capitals Campfire to roast marshmallows and to watch Caps game aired on a jumbotron. (The Wharf Ice Rink, 1 p.m.-4 p.m., $9-$12)

MORE: Fire & Ice Festival (The Wharf, noon, free entry), Perfectionists January Darty (Sauf Haus Bier Hall & Garden, 4 p.m.-7 p.m., free entry)

If you’re so musically-inclined, know the night will end in an open jam sesh! (Eaton DC, 3 p.m., $20 donation)

GROOVY FAMILY TIME: If it’s a long weekend for you, it’s also a long weekend for the kids. Entertain them for a few hours at Capitol Cider House with children’s entertainer Groovy Nate, who combines puppets and exotic musical instruments to engage children in singing and dancing. Kids will benefit from the live music and dance and parents will benefit from the regular weekday happy hour menu which will be available. (Capitol Cider House, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., $5)

SET BOUNDARIES: Hear from LGBTQ+ activist Adrian Shanker on his upcoming book Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists On Health, which is a collection of essays he edited by activists on health issues that queer people experience throughout their lives. The event will be an open book talk. (The Potter’s House, 5 p.m., FREE)

MORE: Puppy Yoga (Yoga Heights, 1:30 p.m., $35), Cheap Date @ 8 (Cafe Saint-Ex, 8 p.m., FREE)

MONDAY, JANUARY 20

PARK CLEAN-UP: Part of the point of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is to celebrate his extraordinary life by honoring his commitment to service. Washington Parks & People is doing so by meeting at Meridian Hill Park/Malcolm X Park to clean up debris, trash, and invasive species in the park. Tools, gloves, and supplies will be provided but volunteers are asked to RSVP. (Malcolm X Park, 10 a.m., FREE)

STEAL THE SHOW: Have you ever felt an itching desire to steal? Imagined yourself as a modern-day Robin Hood? Do you have a five-minute story about it? Join The Moth at its next storyslam: BEG, BORROW, STEAL to tell your story. Participants are asked to arrive at least 10 minutes before the show and to know seating is not guaranteed. (Disclosure: WAMU, DCist’s parent company, is the sponsor) (City Winery, 6:30 p.m., $15).

BEER RUN: Runners are invited to Port City Brewing Company’s tasting room…to immediately run right back out the door. A group of runners will be taking off for a leisurely run through a nearby park and then the paved Holmes Run from the brewery before returning the brewery. It is recommended that runners wear safety gear and headlamps (Port City Brewing Company, 7 p.m., FREE)

MORE: Free entrance day at the National Park (All national parks, FREE)
