American Ninja Warrior—a show that requires contestants to complete a series of impossible and often painful-looking obstacle courses that, to me, look much like one of Dante’s Nine Circles—is taping in D.C. this April.
The show will be hosted at the DC Armory in Southeast, Events DC announced on Twitter. The quasi-public convention and sports authority has been trying to get the show to come film in the District for the last five years, according to Greg O’Dell, Events DC’s president and CEO.
“We’ve performed various site visits for this and hosted them in D.C.,” O’Dell says. “Our mantra is we want to be the sports entertainment capital of the world, so no different than going after a World Cup, we are going after entertainment events. This is not only a great entertainment event but it also secures a lot of visitors coming to the city, which is obviously a sweet spot for us because we want to attract people coming to Washington.”
The show is paying Events DC to use the DC Armory for the taping, O’Dell says. The show looked at different venues in the city, but decided on the DC Armory for a couple of reasons, according to O’Dell: they were looking for an indoor space, a departure from the outdoor venues seen on previous seasons. Also, the obstacle course is so large that it requires about 15 days to build, so they needed a space that isn’t often used for other events.
Both the regionals and semifinals of the competition will be held in D.C., which means it will be taping here on April 6 and 7, and then again on April 11 and 12. Free tickets for spectators will made available thirty days before the taping.
The DC Armory can hold about 10,000 people, but O’Dell says he isn’t yet sure how that number will be impacted by the obstacle course ans setup, or how many tickets will be available. “I’m sure there will be plenty of tickets,” he says.
