D.C.’s new family-focused social club—designed with both parents and children in mind—opens its doors in Ivy City on Saturday.

The Lane, a two-story building in the Northeast neighborhood, offers play areas for children and relaxing spaces for adults, hoping to provide a sense of community in a city where founders Molly Nizhnikov and Rachel Lubin say socializing as a parent can be challenging.

“The goal from day one was to create a space where people can gather, people can connect, and meet other families in that same stage of life,” Nizhnikov says.

The 7,880-square-foot open-concept space bears a closer resemblance to a trendy coffee bar than a playground for children, and Nizhnikov and Lubin say that’s the point. With tall windows lining three of the building’s walls and a citrus-themed color palette, the two women, both D.C. moms, want the space to have a modern aesthetic that feels comfortable for every family member.

“We really wanted it to be something that felt right for adults and for kids too,” Nizhnikov says. “We wanted it to feel bright, we wanted it to feel fresh, we wanted it to feel current.”

The idea for The Lane came over a year ago, when Nizhnikov and Lubin, both on maternity leave at the same time, realized finding places to socialize, drink, and spend time with friends can be hard for parents in D.C. who may want to bring their kids along.

“We spent a year and a half thinking about it, dreaming about it, planning it, going through so many processes to bring it all to life.” Nizhnikov says. “[The goal was] to create a place to relax, take a deep breath and have fun, and we’re finally going to be able to do that.”

On the first floor, children can spend time playing on one of the various attractions: There’s a climbing wall, a couch-lined ball pit, and reading nook outfitted with bean bags and pillows. The floor feels a bit like walking on a moon-bounce, as it’s stacked with a layer of foam underneath to protect children from any bumps and bruises.

Nestled in the back corner is a small “crawlers” area for infants and parents to escape the potential chaos of rambunctious 8-year-olds. Off the steps leading up to the second floor is a 12-foot, custom-made aluminum slide, and a net-bridge that can hold the weight of up to three elephants.

While members of the “guest experience team” (Nizhnikov and Lubin refer to them as “lifeguards”) watch children, parents can order food and drink from the all-day cafe and bar.

Atlas Brew Works will be supplying the beer for The Lane, rotating through seasonal craft beer menus. In addition to snacks like rolled cookie-butter and jelly sandwiches (The Lane is a nut-free zone) and charcuterie boards, the cafe will be serving daily pastries from Pluma Bakery, bagels from Bullfrog Bagels, and smoothies and acai bowls courtesy of The Lane’s in-house chefs.

On the second floor, The Lane has a reserved room for birthday parties and private events, an outdoor patio, and a second, smaller bar. That’s also where most of the facility’s programming, including events like cooking classes and outdoor s’mores roasting, will take place. New moms can also utilize a closed-off nursing nook, located in the back of the second floor.

Memberships start at 95 dollars per month for two parents, two children (under 18), and a caregiver. Non-members can drop in for 20 dollars per two-hour session.

As the women documented The Lane’s construction on Instagram, they say parents started to reach out, expressing interest in the space.

“We got an Instagram message from a man last night and he wrote, ‘Thank you for opening such a place, we’re a two-dad household in Logan Circle with two young toddlers and always wanted something like this,” Nizhnikov quotes. “We’ve had so many parents reach out and say really similar stuff, and every time it sort of overwhelms us and that’s exactly why we did this, because we felt this way and we knew that other families felt this way.”

While most of the response has come from families close to the Ivy City neighborhood, the women say they have plans to expand The Lane beyond Northeast in the future.

“I think it means that The Lane is needed in other neighborhoods too, and we’re going to be enthusiastic to expand as quickly as we can to make sure that all families in this city and hopefully beyond can have that experience,” Lubin says. “This is what we hope is the first of many.”

The Lane is located at 1408 Okie St. NE. Open Mondays and Thursdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sundays 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
