Metro is preparing to shut down three stations on the Orange line from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day due to deteriorating conditions at several platforms. While those shutdowns are months away, the transit agency will be drastically curtailing parking at several stations in mid-March as construction crews begin prep for the work.
The Vienna, Dunn Loring, and East Falls Church stations will close from the end of May through the start of September as crews repair and reconstruct the platforms. The work is a part of Metro’s larger Platform Improvement Project at 20 stations across the system. These outdoor stations have started deteriorating—sometimes dangerously—due to exposure to the elements and de-icing agents, according to Metro. Last summer, Metro shut down six stations on the Blue and Yellow lines to fix serious structural issues on the platforms. This year, it will work on four Orange Line stations—Vienna, Dunn Loring, East Falls Church, and West Falls Church—though it’s only closing down the first three.
While commuters and other riders won’t have to worry about the actual closures for several more months, preparation is beginning in just a few weeks, and it’s going to require a drastic parking cut. “Due to the stations’ location and extreme space limitations, construction crews will need to utilize surface parking lots to stage heavy equipment and tons of material,” WMATA said in a release.
On Friday, Metro announced that on March 15, it will be closing the surface parking lots at the East Falls Church, West Falls Church, and Vienna stations for seven to nine months.
After the closures, there will be no parking whatsoever available at East Falls Church. At West Falls Church, parking will be reduced by 50 percent (1,100 spots will still be available in the parking garage, but Metro expects that they will be filled up every day by 7 a.m.) At Vienna, there will be 10 percent fewer spaces (4,200 will still be available.) There will be no parking closures at Dunn Loring.

After this summer’s shutdown, there will be 10 stations left in the Platform Improvement Project: Addison Road, Arlington Cemetery, Cheverly, College Park, Greenbelt, Landover, New Carrollton, Prince George’s Plaza, Reagan National Airport, and West Hyattsville.
