An Arkansas man was arrested at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday after he allegedly attempted to blow up a vehicle in the Pentagon’s parking lot, officials say.

Matthew Dmitri Richardson, 19, faces federal charges after Pentagon police say he tried to blow up a service member’s SUV late Monday morning, according to a criminal complaint revealed Tuesday. A Pentagon Police Officer alleged in the complaint that the man was standing next to a vehicle striking a cigarette lighter to a piece of fabric inserted in the car’s gas tank.

Police allege that the suspect said he was going to “blow this vehicle up” and “himself” after the officer approached him. The officer said he attempted to detain the suspect, who then pulled away and ran across the parking lot, according to the complaint.

Surveillance camera footage shows that the suspect jumped over a fence into Arlington National Cemetery, where he was later found by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency Police Emergency Response Team, near Arlington House, the complaint reads.

Arlington National Cemetery confirmed to WAMU that the suspect was arrested by law enforcement from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Mike Howard, the public affairs director for Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, said the suspect was fleeing from the Pentagon parking lot when he was apprehended for trespassing at the cemetery.
