Editor’s note: DCist suspended our daily events guides in mid-March. But we’re bringing back weekday and weekend posts with ways to have virtual fun. We’ll be focused specifically on digital offerings from D.C.-area artists, musicians, fitness instructors, and others. (Want us to know about a virtual event? Submit them here.) And don’t forget about our guide to free movies, audiobooks, art and other offerings from area institutions.
FRIDAY, MARCH 27
IN-HOME CONCERT: If you’re missing live music at your favorite spot, look no further than DC Dogs. The arts-focused non-profit will be streaming a new local artist, from musicians to comedy routines, on their Facebook page daily. The first show is Friday, so be sure to grab a glass of wine, your favorite sweats, and enjoy a show from the comfort of your couch. (8 p.m., FREE)
UNWIND: Things are tough right now, so take a breather. On Friday night, you can unwind with yoga nidra, a yoga practice that combines meditation with yoga. Instructors will lead students through a subconscious, guided visualization to relax the mind and release stress. Simon Says Yoga is holding the weekly class via Zoom and anyone can drop in. (6:30 p.m., $22)
SATURDAY, MARCH 28
JUST DANCE 2020: DJ and CEO of Scorpio Entertainment Edward Daniels thought he’d be spending 2020 celebrating the 15-year anniversary of his company by heading to Japan for the 2020 Olympics. But, with the Olympics postponed, plans changed. Now, the DJ is trying to live by his company’s motto to change the world, one party at a time. On Saturday, he will be hosting a virtual dance party with music ranging from the 70s to today. The whole set will be 90-minutes, so beat the quarantine funk with some dancing. (8 p.m., FREE)
JUST IMAGINE YOU’RE IN A GARDEN: While the U.S. Botanic Garden may be closed, yoga in the garden will go on… virtually. WithLoveDC will be guiding a one-hour meditation and yoga practice on Saturday morning. The class is first-come, first-serve for the first 500 people who log into the Zoom stream. (10:30 a.m., FREE)
FIND YOUR COMMUNITY: If you’re a woman who is also an expat or an immigrant, finding your community can be tough — especially right now. Join this virtual women’s circle along with others who understand how you might be feeling for a guided meditation and reflection. Participants are encouraged to bring a mug of something warm—coffee, tea, hot chocolate—and a notebook. A portion of the registration fee will go to the nailsaloon, Logan Circle salon that was hit by layoffs due to the pandemic. (10 a.m., $15)
TURN A NEW PAGE: This new book club by the Sunrise Movement is reading Uprising by Mark and Paul Engler. Saturday’s discussion is only on chapter two, so it’s not too late to jump into their virtual discussion. They even have a Slack channel to keep you occupied throughout the week. (11 a.m., FREE)
SUNDAY, MARCH 29
DRAG SHOW: Grab a mimosa and settle in for a virtual drag show. Local drag queens will be performing via Facebook Live for an end-of-the-world show. Don’t forget to tip (virtually) on Venmo at @Post-Apocalyptic. ( 4 p.m., FREE)
SUNDAY FUNDAY FITNESS: Break up the work-from-home monotony with a fitness session from Sculp’d, a boutique Pilates studio in Alexandria. The studio will be a part of a series of daily fitness classes recorded live on The Scout Guide Alexandria’s Instagram page. If you miss this class in real-time, don’t worry: it will be available on the page for up to 24 hours after. (12 p.m., FREE)
PLAY TIME: Adventure Theatre MTC in Glen Echo, Maryland will be putting on a virtual reading of the bilingual play “On The Wings of Mariposa.” The play follows a 10-year-old girl as she recalls the memories of her beloved abuelita. The 60-minute virtual reading is appropriate for young ages and will give you a preview into the theatre’s 2020-2021 season. (2 p.m., FREE)
