The D.C. Fire and EMS department responded to a two-alarm fire at WMATA headquarters near Judiciary Square Wednesday morning.

A fire broke out just after 6 a.m., and firefighters responded and extinguished the fire on the eighth floor within 20 minutes, Chief Gregory Dean said at a press briefing.

No injuries were reported, and investigators are currently searching for a cause. More info on the cause is expected to be released Thursday.

More than 1,000 people usually work in the building, according to a Metro spokesperson who said many are already working from home and can continue to do so. The eighth floor has IT cubicles and offices, Metro officials say.

There were a few people in the building, but all were safely evacuated, according to D.C. Fire spokesperson Vito Maggiolo.

“This is an older building that does not have sprinkler systems on the upper floors, but it does have smoke detectors and it does have an alarm system,” Dean said.

Once the fire was out, firefighters spent the next few hours removing smoke, salvaging equipment, and investigating the cause of the fire.

Metro said water trickled down to the second floor in some areas. Elevator pits also had water in them. The Metro spokesperson said WMATA personnel expect to return to the building in a week or two.

Metro plans to vacate the office in 2022, in part because of its lack of sprinkler system, and it is slated to become an office building with retail.
