Lafayette Square and the areas surrounding the White House have been popular for demonstrators over the past few days.

This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.

The Secret Service has closed D.C.-owned streets around the White House indefinitely to both vehicles and pedestrians “to ensure public safety,” potentially limiting what has been the main flashpoint for protests over the last four days.

H Street near Lafayette Square has been the epicenter of the demonstrations — it’s unclear how much of that area will be accessible today. It does appear that people are still gathering on H Street around noon, despite the closure.

The Washington Post reports U.S. Attorney General William Barr asked for the extra perimeter.

In an emailed statement, a Secret Service spokesperson wrote: “Road closures remain in effect for pedestrians and vehicular traffic on 15th and 17th Streets, between H Street and Constitution Avenue.  Lafayette Park remains closed.”

The spokesperson did not respond to questions about why the streets were closed or when they may reopen.

A D.C. Metropolitan Police spokesperson says the Secret Service has the ability to close D.C. roads “for the movement or protection of the President.” The spokesperson said they don’t know how long the closures will last but will check.

Tuesday’s move is a further lockdown of the area around the White House.

New fencing went up around Lafayette Square and along 17th Street early Tuesday morning. WAMU’s Politics Hour Analyst Tom Sherwood reports fences and road closure signs are blocking off 15th Street at Pennsylvania Avenue.

Twenty Capital Bikeshare stations within three blocks of the White House have also been closed indefinitely.

Secret Service already closed Lafayette Square over the weekend in response to protests there. The Ellipse south of the White House has also been closed.

The National Park Service is still in the process of building a taller, permanent fence north of the White House. The new 13-foot-tall fence replaces an older 6-foot-6-inch fence.

Public access around the White House has been curtailed more and more over the years.
