Metro is shutting down portions of the rail system to do 24/7 track and other work while ridership is down about 90% because of the coronavirus.
The work begins Monday on the Yellow Line between L’Enfant Plaza and Pentagon and runs through June 27th, the only three-week closure.
Yellow Line trains will run only between Huntington and Reagan National Airport. Riders traveling between D.C. and Virginia should use the Blue Line. Free shuttle buses will operate more frequently than train service to reduce waiting, but riders should still build in another 20 minutes of travel time.
Metro said it will monitor ridership “to ensure that the work does not cause unintended impacts as the region begins the initial stages of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In addition to that work zone, five more of these mini shutdowns are planned across the Green, Yellow, and Red lines in June and July.
June 8-13
Yellow Line work zone: L’Enfant Plaza to Pentagon
Stations closed: None
No Yellow Line service north of National Airport. Free shuttle buses replace trains.
June 14-20
Green Line work zone: Anacostia to L’Enfant Plaza
Stations closed: Waterfront and Navy Yard-Ballpark
Free shuttle buses replace trains between Anacostia and L’Enfant Plaza making stops at Waterfront and Navy Yard-Ballpark stations.
June 21-27
Green/Yellow Line work zone: L’Enfant Plaza to Shaw-Howard U
Stations closed: Mt Vernon Square, Gallery Place (lower level), and Archives
Free shuttle buses replace trains between L’Enfant Plaza and Shaw-Howard U stations. Shuttle buses will make an intermediate stop at Gallery Place. No bus service at Archives or Mt. Vernon Square, since these stations are already closed because of low ridership during the coronavirus pandemic.
L’Enfant Plaza remains open for Green Line service toward Branch Ave only. Blue and Orange Line trains on the lower level will operate normally. Shaw-Howard U Station remains open for service toward Greenbelt only.
Metro just announced the following additional work zones and will have more information for riders in the coming weeks.
June 28-July 18
Green/Yellow Line work zone: U Street to Ft. Totten
Closed Stations: Columbia Heights and Georgia Avenue
July 19-July 25
Red Line work zone: Judiciary Sq to Rhode Island
Closed Stations: Union Station and NoMa
July 26-August 1
Red Line work zone: Ft. Totten to Silver Spring
Closed Station: Takoma
Metro is also working on rebuilding outdoor station platforms and adding newer amenities on the Orange Line and connecting the two phases of the Silver Line together this summer. With nearly 550 construction workers on site, Metro says that work is currently on schedule to be done by Labor Day.
Metro’s work on rebuilding platforms continues into 2022. The work will shut down stations and portions of lines during the following times.

In spring 2021, Arlington Cemetery will close for three months from mid-February to mid-May to work on drainage issues.
“This period was selected because it is actually lower ridership period for these stations than summer, and it avoids the major events held at Arlington Cemetery,” Metro wrote in a brief.
Addison Road will also have some work completed during that time.
In summer 2021, the Green and Yellow line stretch from West Hyattsville to Greenbelt will close from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
In summer 2022, the Orange Line east of Stadium-Armory will close from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
From fall 2022 to spring 2023, the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station will see partial station closures while work is done one track at a time. That station has three tracks.
