The Washington football team announced “a thorough review of the team’s name” Friday morning—the first time team owner Dan Snyder has indicated a willingness to consider scrapping the name that’s a dictionary-defined racial slur.
The creative minds of social media were instantly abuzz with ideas for a replacement. Suggestions ranged from the serious, to the seriously dumb, to the seriously cuddly:
The Washington Red Pandas and then get a baby panda as a mascot. Thanks. pic.twitter.com/tA0y1K4GFG

The Washington Red Pandas does seem a natural choice—honoring Rusty, one of the city’s most famous and most wily animal residents.
Others riffed on official Washington. The Washington Red Tape, The Washington Swamps, The Washington Partisans. Some were catchy, memorable, and would easily fit on a cap, such as:

“The Washington Sources Who Asked Not To Be Named So They Could Speak Frankly.” Such great logo potential.

Or, even better:

There were also serious ideas. Some suggested the Washington Red Clouds, after the famous 19th Century leader of the Oglala Lakota. D.C. Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio weighed in with his own idea: The Washington Veterans.
This is far from the first round of suggestions for a new team name. Washington City Paper conducted a poll in 2012 to find a new moniker: After more than 1,100 votes, the Washington Pigskins came out on top.
One popular suggestion on Friday was The Washington Redtails, with airplane wings on the logo, alluding to the nickname of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black pilots in the U.S. military. The Redtails idea has been around for a while—in 2013 D.C. At-Large Councilmember David Grosso pushed for it when introducing a resolution calling for a name change.
I nominate @petemrogers rebrand of the Washington Redtails in honor of the Tuskegee airmen. Would be brilliant and can keep the same colors. https://t.co/fjmgzS9O6D pic.twitter.com/kv9bGkKXWm

Some offered The Washington Monuments. But that wasn’t the only D.C. landmark among the suggestions.
Washington Halfsmokes. They’re topped with burgundy & gold condiments! Maybe some way to get @benschilibowl some $$$!!!
