D.C.’s NFL team will go by the “Washington Football Team” this season until it decides on a permanent new name, the team announced Thursday.
The organization says it decided to go with a temporary name for brand clarity and consistency purposes and allow a more in-depth branding process “to properly include player, alumni, fan, community, and sponsor input.”
“To date, we have been pleased to see so many people putting forward their vision of what the new name and design should be on their social media channels and we look forward to including their feedback as this process progresses.”
Several potential names are floating around, including the Red Wolves, Red Tails, Sentinels, Warriors and more.
The team’s burgundy and gold colors will stay the same and the helmet logo will be replaced with player numbers. It’s the first time numerals have appeared on the team’s helmets.
The team says it will retire all mention of the old name at team facilities and its website before their first game on Sept. 13. The Football Team announced in early July that it was removing the name, which is a racist slur against Native Americans.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.
Merchandise with “Washington Football Team” will be available in coming days. This month, Nike and other retailers said it would not sell apparel with the old name, partly prompting the change from the team.
