Running back Derrius Guice was released by the Washington Football Team Friday after he was charged in multiple domestic violence incidents.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department said that Guice was arrested on one count of strangulation, three counts of assault and battery, and one count of destruction of property. The charges stem from incidents that happened earlier this year — on Feb. 14, March 13, and April 17 — in Loudoun County, where Guice lives.

The Sheriff’s Department said the incidents were reported to the police in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the victim lives.

Guice turned himself in to authorities around 5 p.m. Friday and was released on a $10,000 bond.

Washington issued a brief statement about two hours later saying that he had been removed from the team. It concluded: “This afternoon we learned that there were multiple charges filed against Derrius. Upon review of the nature of these charges and following internal discussions, we have decided to release Derrius immediately.”

Guice, 23, was a second-round draft pick in 2018 out of LSU. He’d only played in five games over two years because of several knee injuries.

Guice’s arrest and removal from the team comes during a tumultuous offseason for Washington.

After facing backlash from corporate sponsors and the public, the team announced in July that it would “retire” its former name, which was a racist slur against Native Americans. Then, a Washington Post investigation revealed a toxic work environment. More than a dozen former female employees came forward to speak about sexual harassment and verbal abuse they had experienced by other team employees. The following week, the team announced it would call itself the “Washington Football Team” until it chooses a new permanent name.
