Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has been largely absent from the public eye amid personal health issues and the pandemic, made a fraught appearance at a wedding last weekend. The Supreme Court justice officiated a local couple’s nuptials, and in photos of the outdoor ceremony, no one appeared to be wearing a mask.

The bride, Barb Solish, tweeted a photo of the 87-year-old justice officiating behind a lectern — and no, it’s not the work of skillful photoshopping.
A court spokesperson confirmed Ginsburg’s presence to the Associated Press, saying she is a close friend of one of the families, and that the “festivities took place at an outdoor ceremony.”
Although Solish clarified on Twitter that the couple had tested negative for COVID-19 before the wedding, people were not happy to see Ginsburg, who recently underwent treatment for liver cancer, sans mask at a group event.

Somewhat ironically, Ginsburg’s masked face has served as a public health announcement on a sign in Adams Morgan.

Others supported the wedding, noting that Ginsburg is an adult capable of making her own decisions. Plus, it may be hard to judge a six-foot distance from a photo.
