The Richmond Police Department is investigating who shattered the front windows of the Republican Party of Virginia’s headquarters in Richmond.
Party spokesman John March says he arrived at the headquarters Friday morning to discover the damage. “There was glass all over the floor and outside,” he says.
The vandals did not get through a second set of glass walls to enter the office, says March.
Richmond Police Department spokesman James Mercante says detectives were called to the site Friday morning. “Overnight or in the early morning hours, a person or persons broke windows of the storefront,” he says.
March says he has no video footage of the incident and the vandals left no message behind. However, he believed the broken windows were connected to the racial justice protests in Richmond that were sparked by the killing of George Floyd.
“I’m not sure who did it, but I imagine it was a protester who finally googled the Republican Party of Virginia and found our address and came down here and decided to take matters into their own hands,” he says.
Party officials have been critical of the protesters who have been in active in Richmond over the summer, and the city and state’s response to them. “Richmond is no longer run by the rule of law — it has devolved into anarchy,” said Jack Wilson, then chairman of the RPV, in July.
Police request anyone with information about the incident call the Fourth Precinct detectives at (804) 646-4105 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780- 1000.
