The heavy rains that drenched Washington Thursday damaged a portion of Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park, requiring repairs before it can reopen to traffic.

The road between Tilden Street NW near Peirce Mill and Blagden Avenue NW is currently closed due to erosion from floodwater. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will all be rerouted until further notice.

According to the National Park Service, which manages Rock Creek Park and the roadways in it, engineers and work crews will complete a stormwater damage assessment before starting the repairs. The Park Service did not immediately respond to a request for more information on how long the repairs will take.

Just last year, crews completed three years of rehabilitation work along Beach Drive. They installed bio-retention ponds and catch basins to reduce stormwater runoff from Beach Drive into the creek and prevent flash flooding.

But Thursday’s torrential rains still managed to overwhelmed the new system. Up to half a foot of rain fell in just a few hours, the Washington Post reported. The flooded creek covered a section of Beach Drive at Connecticut Avenue with four feet of water.

No accidents have been reported in the area so far.
