A person was struck and killed by a Metro train early Monday morning, authorities said.

The fire department was called to the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro Station around 5:15 a.m., said Vito Maggiolo, a spokesperson for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The person was found dead on the lower-level platform of the Green Line.

Metro Transit Police are investigating how the person fell on the tracks, said Sherri Ly, a spokesperson for the transit agency. In video footage, Ly said the person appeared “unsteady” before falling.

Trains on the Green and Yellow Lines bypassed the Gallery-Place-Chinatown Metro Station and were single-tracked for several hours.
