Does the pandemic have you missing the clatter of a co-worker typing? Or a neighbor spilling a full cup of coffee on your laptop? Perhaps you’re pining for the din of the person in the next cubicle making a very loud phone call to their credit card company?

Well, get all of that back later this year with Rosslyn’s new outdoor co-working space.

Set to open mid-October, “Outdoor Office” (or, just “O2”) is being built and funded by Rosslyn’s Business Improvement District. It will be located in Gateway Park, across the street from the Key Bridge into Georgetown.

“We know that safe outdoor public spaces are key to maintaining mental and physical health, and helping people feel connected to where they spend their time,” wrote Rosslyn BID President Mary-Claire Burick in an email to DCist. “We hope everyone who visits will be inspired by the outdoor surroundings to do their own best thinking!”

The space will feature two separate work areas with free WiFi, each with different seating configurations. At maximum capacity, O2 will be able to accommodate 58 people socially distanced and seated.

Reservations will be available online starting in October, the organizers say. They recommend  signing up for the BID’s newsletter to find out when spaces will be available. There will be no time limit to the reservation, but there will be a minimum of one hour.

The plan is to have O2 up and running until it’s no longer comfortable, writes Burick. “O2 will come down when it becomes too cold for guests to comfortably enjoy the space.”

Gateway Park was chosen due to its central location and there was “underutilized space” that could be used for this purpose. Burick says that much of the park’s green space will remain open to the public. The park is divided by Fort Meyer Drive and is annually the host of the Rosslyn Jazz Festival — which was rebranded this year to the Rosslyn Jazz Supper Club and won’t be located in the park.

Organizers say that there will be a variety of workstation configurations allowing for both individual work and group working spaces. They ensure that all furniture will be placed 6 to 8 feet apart and that “trained Rosslyn BID Ambassadors” will be onsite “to sanitize workspaces and maintain streamlined operations.”

And, don’t worry, 8 feet is still close enough to hear the constant dinging of a co-worker’s phone.
