A man was fatally shot Tuesday night in the Deanwood neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.
Michael Stephon Bright, 30, of Northeast D.C. was found near 45th and Lee streets Northeast just after 9 p.m. Police say the ShotSpotter, an audio device that detects gunshots, heard 10 shots fired in the area, according to the Washington Post. Officers arrived to find a vehicle crashed into a residence. Bright was behind a rowhouse with a gunshot in his back. Fire and Emergency Medical Services took Bright to the hospital where he died of his injuries. MPD is still investigating and is offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
Bright’s death marks the 150th homicide of the year, and a 17% increase from the same time last year. Homicides this year outpace last year’s total of 128, but the number is lower than the 20-year high of 262 set in 2002.
In July MPD Chief Peter Newsham said, “I think it’s disturbing to all of us to be over 100 homicides at this point in the year.” Newsham cited “repeat violent gun offenders being released back into our community” as a reason for the increase.
The New York Times reports that shootings and killings are up across the country during the pandemic. Among other reasons, the Times cites several institutions that have been affected by the pandemic, including summer jobs programs, violence interruption and schools, libraries, recreation centers and public pools being closed.
