Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith returned to the field Sunday for the first time since he suffered a life-threatening leg injury two years ago — perhaps one of the greatest injury comeback stories of all time.

Smith entered the game late in the second quarter after starter Kyle Allen was injured.

Washington struggled against the Los Angeles Rams, losing 30-10. The team is now 1-4 on the year.

But Smith’s comeback itself is something to behold.

He broke his right tibia and fibula in a gruesome injury during a game against the Houston Texans in November 2018 and subsequently went through 17 surgeries. Infections complicated the injury and at one point doctors worried they may have to amputate the leg.

Smith, 36, did ok against a stout Rams defense, going 9 for 17 for 37 yards and no touchdowns. He was sacked six times, which head coach Ron Rivera wasn’t worried about.

“That was good to see to be honest because now you know he can handle it,” Rivera said. “He’s done a great job and it’s a hell of a story.”

Allen was cleared to return to the game in the second half, but Smith stayed in to finish the game. Rivera says they didn’t want to risk Allen taking another hit, but he will start next Sunday’s game vs. the Giants. Dwayne Haskins, who began the year as a starter, was demoted to third-string after poor performances. CBS Sports reports he may be traded
