Drivers rolled through the streets honking their horns. People banged on pots and pans. Go-go music blared downtown as crowds danced in the street.
News of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ election to the White House, called by the AP and other networks around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, washed over the deep blue D.C. region and kicked off a full day of celebration. By day’s end, trash cans downtown brimmed with cups and empty Champagne bottles.
Outside the White House, crowds poured into Black Lives Matter Plaza, the site of racial justice demonstrations for the last several months.
“I was actually at home, and we heard honking outside. I knew that there must be some news, and we came running out,” D.C. resident Rob Sassor told DCist/WAMU Saturday. “I was like, ‘I have to go to Black Lives Matter Plaza.'”
The White House itself is still bounded by a “non-scalable” fence surrounding Lafayette Square. People have now added new signs to the fence with messages like “Get out of MY house,” and hundreds affixed their signatures in multicolored markers to a giant mock eviction notice that reads, “You [President Trump] are hereby ordered to vacate 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW., D.C.”
William Jones, a self-described fourth generation Washingtonian, was selling Biden-Harris T-shirts and masks in Black Lives Matter Plaza Saturday. He said Trump had demonstrated that “he’s not good for the office, he’s not good for the people of the United States.”
“Today has been a celebration,” said Jones, 56. “My heart feels overjoyed, overwhelmed. [D.C.] is the best place in the world today.”
Here’s a look back at D.C.’s reaction to Biden and Harris’ win.
