Arlington County Police say DNA analysis has allowed them to make an arrest in a series of cold-case rapes from 1991.

Police arrested Michael F. Thomson, 63, of Montross, Virginia, on Monday in connection with the cases that happened around the East Falls Church Metro station. He’s been charged with two counts of rape, abduction with the intent to defile, forcible sodomy and use/display of a firearm during the commission of a felony. More charges are expected.

Throughout 1991, police investigated multiple reports of rape and attempted rape of women walking from the East Falls Church Metro Station. “In each reported incident, the victims were approached by an unknown male who displayed a firearm,” a police news release says. “Three cases were linked by DNA evidence with a fourth case being investigated as part of the series due to similarities with the other cases.”

The offenses happened on January 17, February 13, March 6 and December 2, 1991. Police say Thomson followed victims from the Metro station and forced them to residential areas where he assaulted them and then he left on foot on two occasions. On the December 2 incident, the suspect fled in a vehicle after the victim screamed. That night, he dropped a baseball hat he was wearing.

DNA from the baseball hat was later linked to DNA recovered in the January 17 and February 13 incidents. Arlington’s Cold Case unit looked at the case again in 2017. The DNA was analyzed, including phenotyping and genetic genealogy, which led detectives to identify Thomson as a possible suspect.

Thompson’s attorney has not yet returned a request for comment.

Police say the case is still under investigation.
