This is a developing story and will be updated.

Police in Fairfax County shot a person on Thursday, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Police say officers responded to a shooting at the 2000 block of Peach Orchard Drive in Falls Church. Then, “upon arrival an armed confrontation ensued between officers & an individual,” the department wrote on Twitter.

In a briefing with reporters Thursday afternoon, Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said police received a 911 call at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Thursday from a man “who advised that an acquaintance inside his apartment had shot him.”

Roessler said police “immediately started negotiations with those inside the apartment” upon their arrival. He said the suspect, who was armed, “was actively trying to attack the victim again.”

Roessler said officers were “faced with gunfire” as they entered the apartment.

After officers shot the suspect, medics responded and transported both people to the hospital.

The man who made the 911 call is “expected to survive,” according to Roessler. The person who allegedly shot him, and who was shot by officers, was still in surgery as of Roessler’s last briefing.

One officer suffered a minor injury, Roessler said, but is “OK.”

Police did not take questions from reporters at the scene.
