While a normal morning commute into D.C. can be less-than pleasant, the traffic on Tuesday created a nightmare for travelers as a slew of bridge closures ahead of Inauguration Day congested roadways into and around the city.
I-395 was a mess by 7 a.m., one hour after the closure of the 14th Street Bridge went into effect. One video on Twitter showed a truck driver regretting their decision to board the 110 on-ramp to I-395, reversing down the ramp as another car bypassed it to merge.

Later Tuesday morning, D.C. police issued an updated traffic advisory, opening several roadways to local traffic. The closures of major bridges restricting access west of the river for residents east of the Anacostia River had some locals concerned over the weekend. Others bridges, like the 14th Street Bridge, will remain closed to traffic entering the city.
Tuesday morning’s traffic mayhem is another in a series of disruptions to local D.C. life this week, as city and federal agencies clamp down on security ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. D.C. Police are encouraging essential workers who use impacted roadways to enter the city through 295 North at E. Capitol St., Benning Road, or New York Avenue.
The closures are expected to last through 6 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21.
