Just look at that face. No, really, look at that panda cub face today at 1 p.m. EST during the National Zoo’s first free livestreamed event from its Giant Panda house.
Giant Panda cub Xiao Qi Ji, who wasn’t cute before but is extremely cute now, will make his live event debut with a brief virtual tour of his habitat and a behind-the-scenes look at how the famed Giant Panda Cams work. The cams are one of five animal webcam sets hosted by the zoo.
The cub just turned 5 months old last week and, weighing about 20 pounds, continues to try new foods and make solid gains.
“You’ll experience an up-close, real-time look at Xiao Qi Ji as he walks, climbs, tumbles and explores his indoor habitat,” the zoo said in a release.
Registration is not required to watch the event, which will be a mix of pre-recorded and live video. With the zoo closed indefinitely due to the pandemic, local residents and officials are anxiously anticipating the cub’s virtual display of cuteness.

Xiao Qi Ji has enjoyed plenty of attention since Mei Xiang gave birth to him over the summer – more than 1.5 million virtual visitors have tuned in to watch him grow, according to the zoo.
“Just like his mother, Mei Xiang, our giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji is curious yet cautious about the world around him,” zookeepers said.
Viewers can watch the live broadcast on the Zoo’s event page, YouTube channel, or Facebook page. The cub’s time on camera during the event will only be about 5 minutes with the tour lasting 10 minutes, but a recording of the full event will be available after the livestream airs.
