The Washington Spirit announced a new group of high-profile investors in the team. Among the names are two presidential daughters from opposite sides of the aisle: Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager, as well as former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.

You could call it the Washington Spirit … of bipartisanship.

“It is fitting that the Washington Spirit have an investor group commensurate with the dynamism and diversity of D.C. and its place as the most powerful city in the world,” managing partner Steve Baldwin said in a press release. “Our club has big ambitions globally,” he added.

Other familiar Washington names on the list of investors include Barack Obama’s former press secretary Jay Carney and journalist and author Claire Shipman, who is married to Carney.

Other investors in the group come from the worlds of sports, business and philanthropy, such as Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes (who now owns a gymnastics academy in Montgomery County), and Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, the former ambassador to Finland as well as a businesswoman and first female chair of the American Red Cross,

Ownership of the team expanded in December, when health IT magnate Y. Michele Yang joined owners Steve Baldwin and Bill Lynch.

According to the team, the new investors will give the Washington Spirit a higher profile within the National Women’s Soccer League. The league’s 2020 season was disrupted due to the pandemic, though the Spirit did return to play in June.

Chelsea Clinton is currently vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, the philanthropic organization founded by her father. Jenna Bush Hager is co-host of Today with Hoda & Jenna.
