Capitol Police Officer William “Billy” Evans laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday, the second officer to be honored in the same way this year. He was killed on April 2 when a driver rammed his car into the security barriers at the north entrance to the Capitol grounds on Constitution Avenue. Another officer was also injured during the incident. The suspect was then shot and killed by Capitol Police.

President Biden spoke at the memorial service in the rotunda, and attendees included family and friends of Evans, fellow Capitol Police officers as well as congressional leadership. As the honor guard carried Evans’ casket down the east steps of the Capitol during the departure ceremony, bagpipes began to play. A long procession of police motorcycles and vehicles escorted the departing hearse to a funeral home.

As the crowds of police and National Guard lining Constitution Avenue dispersed, Sage Bauer of D.C. placed a bouquet of flowers at a makeshift memorial right near the gate where Evans was killed. Bauer said though she didn’t know Evans well, this used to be her jogging route and that they would wave at each other as she passed by. The flowers are to “remember him and show…the Capitol Police that we are thinking of them.”
