Rumors are swirling that Drake, a.k.a. Champagne Papi himself, was in Columbia Heights filming a music video for a Nicki Minaj song he’s featured on called “Seeing Green.” A flyer claiming to be from Warner Records circulated social media for a bit, and some accounts commented the video shoot would take place around 14th Street and Kenyon NW between 8 and 10 p.m.
Sadly, it appears that these details are exactly that — rumors.
The District’s Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment, which typically approves permits for these types of shoots, did not receive a request or issue a filming permit to Warner Records, OCTFME’s chief communications officer Michael Mitchell told DCist in a phone call. A lawyer for Warner Records has not responded to a request for comment from DCist.
Others have already caught on: Deuxmoi, a popular celebrity gossip account that had initially posted some of the information about the shoot on its Instagram stories, wrote back to DCist in a Twitter direct message: “I’m going to be honest with you. Some people think it’s fake.”
A number of Barbz (Nicki Minaj’s loyal fanbase) have pointed out that “Seeing Green,” the new Nicki Minaj single featuring labelmates Drake and Lil Wayne, was released under Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group — not Warner Records.
Michelle Hackman, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, said her Columbia Heights condo building sent out an advisory to residents about the video. The email, obtained by DCist, stated that an unnamed “representative” gave the flyer to the building’s front desk and that Kenyon and Irving Streets would be blocked off to traffic during the shoot. D.C. police and Department of Transportation representatives didn’t respond to an inquiry about those road closures.
By the looks of it, Drake was actually hanging out with his star-studded crew in Los Angeles, a group that included Lebron James and Michael B. Jordan. (The last time Jordan was in town, it was impossible to miss, thanks to thirsty fans posting about it online.)
Can you blame D.C. residents for getting excited about a possible Drake appearance? The last time the Certified Lover Boy was in Columbia Heights, he hurled a wad of cash during an altercation at a strip club and dazzled fans by ordering at Z-Burger. But hey, if he stops back in the burger shop, this time he can walk away with free small fries (with proof of vaccination).
was there around 8pm and later at 10pm — nothing! a big letdown.
