D.C. Police say they have arrested a teenage boy who used homophobic slurs and threatened someone with a machete in the Shaw neighborhood.

The 13-year-old, who is not named in the police report, was arrested Sunday and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police say the incident happened on Saturday around 3 p.m. at 520 Florida Ave. NW when the teenager approached the victim and made harassing and derogatory remarks. The teenager left, but came back with a machete and harassed the person again as they were eating at a restaurant outdoors. The address on the police report corresponds to Shaw’s Tavern.

According to the police report, the teenager threatened to stab the victim and said “I’ll silence you,” before motioning the machete at the victim. The police report also states the teenager used homophobic slurs and flung cicadas at the victim.

The crime took place the same weekend as D.C.’s Pride parade.

No one was injured, but MPD is investigating it as “potentially being motivated in whole or in part by hate or bias.”

In a statement, Shaw’s Tavern owners said, “We are incredibly concerned in regards to the incident that occurred Saturday afternoon. MPD has reached out to me personally to discuss the matter and we appreciate their willingness to address the ongoing influx of crime in the neighborhood and their proactive communication with local businesses. But it’s clear this is not a problem that can be solved by MPD alone— we need more action from top to bottom.

“Unfortunately, a majority of the recent incidents have involved minors, some as young as 12 years old. Over the past several months, we have been in communication with fellow business owners, our ANC, MPD, council members, the Mayor’s office, and youth outreach coordinators in hopes of collectively addressing the instances of crime. Clearly, we’re failing given the frightening nature of this incident, which occurred in broad daylight with thousands of people out celebrating Pride weekend. Shaw’s Tavern is proud to be a gathering place where all people are welcome and celebrated. We firmly condemn any and all acts of hate, including this most recent incident in our neighborhood. We have been able to get in touch with the victim and are grateful he is safe.”
