The Nationals Wednesday night game against the Phillies has been postponed due to coronavirus safety protocols, according to Major League Baseball.

In a statement Wednesday evening, the MLB said the postponement is “to allow for continued testing and contact tracing involving members of the Nationals organization.” The Nats are now slated to take on the Phillies in a double-header on Thursday, with the first game starting at 12:05 p.m.

Spokespeople for the Nationals did not immediately return DCist/WAMU’s request for comment, but NBC reported that 12 players have been “placed into COVID protocol,” with one of those players unvaccinated, per manager David Martinez. During Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies, shortstop Trea Turner was pulled off the field in the first inning after testing positive for COVID-19.

The team relaxed some of its coronavirus protocol in late May, with 85% of team members fully vaccinated.

The delayed Wednesday game comes amid an already rocky week for the Nats, fresh off a series loss to the Baltimore Orioles and staring down a trade deadline, but a COVID-induced postponement is nothing new for the team. Their entire opening series against the Mets was postponed for the same reason in April.
