Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling was locked down for nearly three hours today after reports of a shooting close to the facility in Southeast D.C.

The base posted an update via Facebook shortly after 3 p.m., saying the “threat of an armed individual” had been cleared. One person was detained and is being transferred to the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department, according to the post.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, Air Force Col. Michael Zuhlsdorf told reporters that the man entered the base illegally and injured himself while hopping two fences, per WJLA. A husband-and-wife team with the base’s security forces found the suspect hiding in a dumpster on site around 2:45 p.m., Zuhlsdorf said. The security team found a gun earlier in the afternoon at a different location on the base and turned it over to MPD.

The situation began at approximately 12:04 p.m., when MPD received a call reporting the sound of gunshots in the 3800 block of Halley Terrace SE, according to an MPD spokesperson.

There were no immediate reports of victims of the gunfire, but police suspect that a male gunman was firing shots in the area before running onto the base, the spokesperson said.

Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling posted an update on its Facebook page at 1:35 p.m. urging anyone on the base to run if they had a safe route or hide in place.

“Be on the lookout for *ONE* individual on base. Continue to shelter in place. The individual in question is a black male, medium build with dreads that are mid-back in length. He is wearing blue or green pants and a white tank top (possibly with a bag). Do not go looking for the individual,” said the post.

Air Force officials and D.C. police have not yet released the suspect’s name, but said he doesn’t appear to have any ties to the base.

This post has been updated with additional information about the incident, including that the lockdown has been lifted.
