FUNDAMENTALS OF MACARONS: Want to impress with your French pastry baking skills? Take this weekly course with Pastry Codex to learn how to make the classic French meringue cookie at The Board Room in Arlington. You can choose your own color and filling, then enjoy the cookies before taking home the recipe and some top tips on the best macaron. Classes take place every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. DECONSTRUCTING BITTERS: You may know bitters as a cocktail ingredient, but learn how they’re used in medicine, too, with Little Red Bird Botanicals at this Common Good City Farm event. For the first hour, Holly Poole-Kavana will teach medicinal properties of bitters, and the second hour will be all about mixology, as Glendon Hartley from Service Bar makes bitters-based cocktails. SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS: Carnegie Science explores what it means for liquids to persist in solid states, called metastability (imagine if ice didn’t melt after you leave it on the kitchen counter for a while) This week’s virtual event will discuss future prospects for conquering metastability, provide a live demonstration of high-pressure materials generator technology and highlight some recently discovered cutting-edge metastable materials. DISH OF THE DAY: Learn the art of Plat du Jour, a.k.a. the dish of the day, with this virtual Smithsonian Associates event. French restaurants typically prepare the dish of the day with the best ingredients available daily at local markets. Cooking teacher, author, and journalist Susan Herrmann Loomis will deconstruct old favorites and contemporary versions of plats du jour, while including some of her own creations. (6:30 p.m., $25)

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
LAST WHARF CONCERT: Head to the Transit Pier at the Wharf for their final Wednesday concert with Hijinx, a pop and rock band. The Wharf previously extended its two-hour live music shows through the end of September. (Transit Pier, 7 p.m., FREE)
VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE: Stream the Washington Stage Guild’s online performance of Dear Liar, a play that brings to life the 40-year relationship of George Bernard Shaw and the actress who was the first Eliza Doolittle. Attendees will have a 48-hour window in which to view the performance, which is available until October 3. (8 p.m., donations welcome)
MUSEUM TALK: Join staff from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian Gardens for a virtual conversation about the changing field of museum work and the need for more diversity. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
CONCERT AFTER HOURS: D.C.’s Asian food hall, The Block, will host DMV-based soul and R&B band Terra Firma at the after-hours bar. Terra Firma made their debut at Union Stage and now head to The Block for a night of food, craft drinks, and a unique and eclectic sound. (The Block 6 p.m., free admission)

MARCH ON WASHINGTON FILM: The March on Washington Film Festival returns for its ninth annual event, with a virtual schedule chock full of films about civil rights. The opening night for the festival, which runs through October 4, includes an annual gala honoring Rep. James Clyburn, an awards ceremony, and performances from Frédéric Yonnet and The Band With No Name and The Shiloh Baptist Church Gospel Choir. Attendees can pay what they can for virtual viewings of the films, or purchase a $149 all-access pass for in-person events and viewings (various times and prices)
