The fifth annual Women’s March will take place in D.C. this Saturday.
Dubbed the “Rally for Abortion Justice,” this year’s demonstration focuses on reproductive justice — specifically, the near total ban on abortion in Texas. Since the massive turnout for the inaugural march in January 2017, attendance in the subsequent years has dropped — but a permit for Saturday’s event projects about 10,000 participants, according to the National Park Service. Organizers are asking everyone to wear masks at the event.
At 10 a.m., a faith service will take place in Freedom Plaza, before a rally kicks off there at noon. Around 1:30 p.m., crowds are expected to head from the plaza to the Supreme Court. (Also on Saturday, also downtown, will be George Washington University’s commencement for the 2020 and 2021 graduating classes. The commencement is set to take place on the mall between 7th and 14th streets, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
