Calling all curious kids and tiny travelers: This month is your chance to experience European culture without a plane ticket – Kids Euro Fest returns with brand-new activities!
Kids Euro Fest (KEF) is a tradition in the nation’s capital. For 14 years, it has been one of the largest performing arts festivals for children in America. Artists and performers from across the 27 European Union countries have participated, including puppeteers, dancers, musicians, and children’s book authors.
After going entirely virtual in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kids Euro Fest will now offer a hybrid structure for learning about the unique cultures of the 27 European Union countries. For the first time, KEF will feature two in-person Family Days located at two different embassies in Washington. The first will take place October 9 at the Embassy of France, and the second on October 16 at the Embassy of Sweden. From 12-4 PM on both days, families are invited to enjoy European performances, activities, crafts, games, and food.
Health and safety precautions will be in place at both Family Days, including masks for kids ages 2-12. Activities will take place both indoors and outdoors with social distancing and limited attendance.
For those unable to attend either Family Day, Kids Euro Fest will also launch separate virtual content on its website on October 9. These include online performances, storytelling, films, and workshops. Participate in a baking workshop with Slovakia on traditional biscuits, learn from Denmark and Italy on green solutions to environmental problems, and watch an adventure film from Romania. Each is a perfect way to bring some European culture into the comfort of home with some added flexibility.
For families looking for even more fun, on Sundays from October 10-24, be sure to check out the Embassy of Finland’s Moomin exhibit at the National Children’s Museum. In addition, on October 23, the Embassy of Hungary will celebrate its Hungarian National Day for Kids with folk dance performances and lessons, an exhibition on Hungarian history, and painting workshops.
The best part? Everything is entirely FREE. Just remember that the in-person events and some virtual content require registration, so visit www.kidseurofest.org to learn more and secure your spot today.
