DC Water will start disconnecting service for people with unpaid bills.
The utility company says those who have past-due bills should pay or contact them by December 1 for assistance or to set up a payment plan.
DC Water CEO and General Manager David Gadis said in a statement that the utility has more than $26.3 million outstanding, which jeopardizes operations.
“As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on revenue for operations and capital projects,” he said. “With arrears this significant, it could jeopardize our ability to deliver these critical services.
“We are resuming disconnections to encourage payment by those who can afford to pay their bills. And to find financial assistance programs for those who cannot afford to pay.”
DC Water stopped charging late fees and interest during the pandemic as some residents struggled to make ends meet, but resumed in September.
The utility says there are nine federal and local programs designed to help residents. Residents can find information about those programs at dcwater.com/cares or they can call 202-354-3600 or email cares@dcwater.com.
