With temps dropping into the low 30s overnight, the District and Montgomery Country are activating their respective hypothermia alerts for the first time this winter. The National Weather Service says wind speeds could reach 18 mph.
Hypothermia alerts occur when the NWS forecasts a temperature at or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or when there’s a forecast of 40 degrees or lower with a chance of precipitation at or above 50 percent. The District is required to shelter all people experiencing homelessness when an alert is activated. The District opens public spaces like rec centers and other social service centers so people can warm up.
Tonight’s alert will be in effect from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Mayor Muriel Bowser is asking residents to watch out for others and help people experiencing homelessness in need of shelter by calling the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or by dialing 311. If there’s a medical emergency, dial 911.
Residents can get transportation to shelters at Adams Place (Men); 801 East (Men); New York Avenue (Men); Harriet Tubman (Women); Pat Handy Legacy (Men); Pat Handy Swing (Women); St. Josephine’s (Women); Downtown Day Center (Men); and Sherwood Recreation Center (Women).
In Montgomery County, the alert will be in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Residents concerned about the well-being of someone outside can call the 24-hour number at 240-907-2688. Outreach partners will attempt to locate the individual and offer resources and support. Individuals in need of emergency shelter should call the Crisis Center at 240-777-4000.
