Christmas is over. Womp womp.
Now, it’s time to take down that Christmas tree you schlepped up your steps and dragged down your hallway earlier this month, before it completely dries out and becomes a fire hazard.
Around the D.C. region, several jurisdictions offer Christmas tree recycling, which composts the trees and chips them down to be used for mulch, so they don’t end up in landfills.
Once you’ve taken all of your lights, tinsel, and ornaments off the tree, here’s how to make sure it gets recycled in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia:
D.C.

MARYLAND
Montgomery County: Trees are collected as a part of the county’s year-round yard trim collection, so just put your tree to the curb by 7 a.m. on your normal recycling day. If you live in an apartment building or condo, check in with your building manager for recycling instructions.
Prince George’s County: Prince George’s County tree collection will run through Jan 31. Place your tree at the curb by 6 a.m. on your normal recycling pickup day. You can also drop your tree of at one of the two recycling centers: Brown Station Road (2501 Brown Station Road, Upper Marlboro) or the Missouri Avenue Center (12701 Missouri Avenue, Brandywine).
VIRGINIA
Arlington: The county has delayed tree pick-up due to delays in snow removal after the Jan. 3 snowfall. From Jan. 10 to Jan. 21, place your tree to the curb before 6 a.m. on your regular trash collection day. If you live in an apartment or condo without curbside collection, you can take your tree to Solid Waste Bureau’s Earth Products Yard (4300 29th St S, Arlington). To make a drop-off appointment, call 703-228-5000. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Alexandria: Tree collection starts Jan. 3 and runs through Monday, Jan 31. You should put your tree out with the rest of your trash on your normal collection day.
Fairfax: During the first two weeks of January, licensed trash collectors are required to pick up and recycle Christmas trees below eight feet. Due to labor shortages, the county says collectors now have the option to collect your tree with trash. Residents are directed to contact their collection service for information. Residents can also take their tree to the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Rd, Fairfax) or the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Rd, Lorton) and pay $7 to have their tree recycled.
