The Senate voted to confirm the first Black woman to the Supreme Court in U.S. history this afternoon. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is a D.C. native and her hometown is celebrating her historic confirmation, including with events starting this evening and going through the weekend. Here’s how you can join in on the festivities.
Watch coverage of the confirmation with other supporters: On Thursday April 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Higher Heights for America is hosting a celebration in honor of Jackson at the YOTEL Washington, D.C., located at 415 New Jersey Ave NW. Sip on drinks and continue watching the coverage of her historic confirmation. RSVP here to attend in person or virtually.
Dance to go-go music in front of the Supreme Court: On Friday April 8 at 4 p.m., join other supporters on First St. NE, between Maryland Ave. and East Capitol. According to Washingtonian, the kid-friendly event will have child-sized judge’s robes for sale, as well as chalk and jump rope. Live music will be provided by DC organization Long Live GoGo and Baltimore Urban Inspiration Choir. The event is hosted by several local left-leaning organizations, including National Women’s Law Center and SPACES in Action. If you can’t make it in person, you can live-stream the party on Facebook.
Party on 14th street and check out a new mural: On Saturday, April 9 from 12 – 4 p.m., a number of organizations, including She Will Rise, are partnering with the office of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to host a block party and mural unveiling at the corner of 14th and S streets NW. The new mural graces the side of the restaurant Chicken and Whiskey, and the party promises music, food and entertainment. She Will Rise is an organization that was launched in fall of 2020 with the goal of elevating the first Black woman to the Supreme Court.
