D.C. United head coach Hernán Losada is leaving the team – effective immediately, according to a press release put out by the club. The team fired him over his coaching performance, according to multiple news outlets.
“We’d like to thank Hernán for his time at the club and the energy he brought, as well as the attack-minded, front-foot philosophy and style of play he instilled within our club,” said head of operations Dave Kasper in a press release put out by the team on Wednesday. “We wish him great success moving forward.”
The team’s assistant coach, Chad Ashton, will assume the role of interim head coach immediately, the team announced.
Dave Kasper, the team’s head of operations, told the Washington Post in an interview that the team’s leadership was concerned with the direction the team was headed.
“The start of the season was not what we expected, but it’s not just this year,” Kasper told the outlet. “We weren’t happy with the way things finished last year.”
The Athletic and the Washington Post both reported that there has been tension in Losada’s relationships with both players and team management.
Losada was initially hired by the team in January of 2021, after the D.C. United parted ways with its previous coach, Ben Olsen, in the fall of 2020 amid a disappointing season and six-game losing streak.
It’s been another rough season for D.C. United this year. The team is currently ranked last in the MLS’s Eastern Conference standings. On Saturday, the team suffered a particularly upsetting 2-3 loss, where they conceded all three goals in the final 10 minutes against Austin FC after leading for much of the game. Washington Post soccer reporter Steven Goff described the end of that match as a plunge into despair and an “incomprehensible collapse.”
