Pharrell Williams is bringing his “Something in the Water” festival to D.C., the musician and producer announced Tuesday at a press conference with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser at Ballou High School.

Members of the Ballou High School Majestic Knights Marching Band performed Williams’ 2013 hit “Happy” at the press conference before he was presented with a medal and honorary membership to the group.

Williams said  that the festival will be held along the National Mall and Independence Avenue during Juneteenth weekend. Performances will be held on three different stages and will feature Tyler the Creator, Calvin Harris, Jon Batiste, among others.

This decision comes several months after Williams pulled the festival from his hometown of Virginia Beach following a public rift with local leaders .

“We chose to take that solution that we had in our festival to the highest grounds, in my opinion, in this entire nation,” said Williams during the press briefing. “We decided to take that solution to the highest platform we can find. And that is on our nation’s capital.”

The move to D.C. would mark the second time that the festival has been staged since its inauguration in 2019. (Festivities were canceled the last few years because of COVID-19).

Williams pulled the Something in the Water Festival from Virginia Beach last fall, alleging that the city’s local government was full of “toxic energy.” Earlier that year, Williams’ cousin Donovon Lynch had been shot and killed by a Virginia Beach police officer. The officer wasn’t wearing a body camera, according to local outlet Wavy, and Lynch’s family disputes police accounts of his death.

In a letter to city manager Patrick Duhaney, obtained by Wavy, Williams criticized leadership in Virginia Beach for placing more “energy” on the loss of the music festival compared to the life of his cousin.

“I sang about a room without a roof, but I am tired of kindly and politely being shown the door,” said Williams in the letter.

Williams previously touted that the purpose of the music festival was to ease racial tensions and provide economic opportunities for the local community. The 2019 Something in the Water festival provided millions of dollars in revenue to the city of Virginia Beach.
