Metro announced travel alternatives on Wednesday for the service projects that will disrupt Yellow Line service for 8 months starting this September.
In March, Metro unveiled its plan to shutter a portion of the Yellow Line to complete several large-scale projects, like opening a new Potomac Yard Station, extending the Silver Line, and rehabilitating the Yellow Line’s Potomac River tunnel and bridge. The closure will begin on Sept. 10, and occur in two phases. Currently, the projects are set to wrap in May 2023.
In the first phase of the construction from Sept. 10 to Oct. 22, riders can expect these disruptions:
- No rail service south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station
- Yellow Line stations north of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station will be served by the Blue or Green lines
- Additional Blue Line service, with trains departing every seven to nine minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and New Carrollton stations (every 15 minutes after 9:30 p.m.)
- Blue Line customers traveling between Pentagon and L’Enfant Plaza stations should plan on approximately 15 minutes of extra travel time
- Green Line trains will operate every eight minutes (every 10 minutes after 9:30 p.m.)
In phase one, Metro will be operating local and express shuttles to cross the Potomac River. Local shuttles will be available during all Metrorail operating hours. The Blue Line Local shuttle will run between Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn St, King St-Old Town, Braddock Rd, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport stations every 10-20 minutes, and the Yellow Line Local will provide service between Huntington, Eisenhower Ave, King St-Old Town, Braddock Rd, and Crystal City stations every 10-15 minutes. (Yellow Line shuttles do not stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station.)
Express shuttles will be available most of the day — 4:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends. The Blue Line Express will run between Franconia-Springfield and Pentagon every six minutes, while the Yellow Line Express will run between Huntington and Pentagon stations every six minutes.
WMATA will also be adding limited shuttles during weekday rush hour. One will run between Crystal City, Pentagon City, Smithsonian, and L’Enfant Plaza stations every 12 minutes, another will run between Pentagon, Smithsonian, and Archives stations every 12 minutes, and a third will run between Mt. Vernon, Alexandria, and Potomac Park every 20 minutes.
The second phase of construction will last from Oct. 23 2022 to May 2023.
- All stations will reopen, and service will resume south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station
- All Yellow Line stations will be served by the Blue or Green lines
- Blue Line trains will operate every 12 minutes between Largo Town Center and Franconia-Springfield stations and every 12 minutes between Huntington and New Carrollton stations (every 15 minutes after 9:30 p.m.)
- Green Line trains will operate every eight minutes (every 10 minutes after 9:30 p.m.)
To further replace service, Metro will provide three shuttles during weekday rush hours only. One will run between Crystal City, Smithsonian, and L’Enfant Plaza every 12 minutes. Another will run between Pentagon , Smithsonian, and Archives stations every 12 minutes, and a third will run between Mt. Vernon, Alexandria, and Potomac Park every 20 minutes.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Metro noted that if the 7000-series trains are out of service, replacement trains will operate even less frequently, but earlier on Wednesday, the transit agency said it will begin bringing back 7000-series trains sometime this week.
