This Fourth of July weekend, Metro is warning that riders can expect crowded platforms and wait times of up to one hour after the National Mall fireworks, as the agency continues to keep some railcars off the tracks.
WMATA suggests arriving and departing from a station other than Smithsonian to watch the fireworks show, as that station will become entry-only after 9 p.m. on the Mall side. Metro Transit Police may also stop entry to stations if they deem the crowds on any platform unsafe.
Though WMATA is adding extra trains on the Red Line to meet holiday demand, the agency warns they will still have less capacity than on previous Independence days.
Elsewhere this weekend, expect most trains on all lines to run between 10-20 minutes apart. Additionally, five stations on the Orange line remain shuttered.
The system will close at 1 a.m. on Saturday night, and midnight on Sunday and Monday nights.
