D.C. Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that injured a 7-year-old boy in Southeast D.C. Monday evening. The driver was an 11-year-old boy. Police had no other details about the circumstances of the crash.

The crash happened at about 6:49 p.m. in the 1800 block of Mississippi Ave., S.E. – near a playground. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The case will be reviewed with the D.C. Attorney General’s office, which handles juvenile crime in the city.

The vehicle involved was a silver Kia, according to photos from the scene. NBC4 reports the 11-year-old was “unable to press the brake and stop the vehicle before striking the victim. He left the silver Kia at the scene of the crash and fled on foot, according to police.”

Police did not comment on whether the incident is related to a trend of stolen Kias and Hyundai vehicles nationwide, which can be more easily stolen without a key.

It’s the second crash in the region this week involving a young driver. A 12-year-old was killed in a Howard County, Maryland, crash earlier this week when she lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

The crash involving young kids comes on the heels of a deadly stretch of vehicles hitting and killing cyclists in the District. Traffic safety advocates are holding a rally at the Wilson Building Wednesday evening to demand Mayor Muriel Bowser do something about the rash of traffic violence.
