New name, new look, potential return to D.C., who dis? Every aspect of the Washington Commanders is getting a facelift, including the team’s new fight song. The familiar melody of the original tune will stay the same, but with significant changes to the lyrics.

The previous song, “Hail to the R******s” was composed by Barnee Breeksin with lyrics written by Corinne Griffith, a silent film star and wife of team founder, George Preston Marshall, as reported by the Washington Post.  The song not only contained the derogatory slur, but also references “Braves on the Warpath!” and “Fight for old Dixie!”  And when it first debuted in 1938, the original lyrics included “Scalp ’em, swamp ’em — We will take ’em big score.” The Dixie lyrics were changed in the 60s after the Redskins were, in 1962, the last pro team to integrate. References to scalping were amended later in the 70s.

Now, to fit the more neutral image of the Commanders, lyric change options include “Fight for our Commanders!” and “Leaders on a mission!”.

Fans have until August 6 to make their pick, and the marching band is expected to debut the new song and lyrics at the first pre-season game on August 13th.
