Snallygaster, the D.C. region’s biggest annual beer festival is back for its 10th year on Saturday, Oct. 8, and tickets go on sale Monday, organizers said Thursday.
The event has grown from a niche event in Navy Yard to a major annual brewfest held on Pennsylvania Avenue that attracts visitors from far beyond the region. Named after the winged, legendary beast that’s said to have terrorized central Maryland and the D.C. area in the 18th century, the festival boasts more than 350 beers from from about 150 international, national, and regional breweries. The event features food trucks and live music on two stages — the set list is TBA.
The festival returned in person last year after taking a break in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Snallygaster, which has been around since 2012, is run by Neighborhood Restaurant Group — the company behind craft beer destinations Bluejacket, ChurchKey, and The Sovereign, among others. It’s one of the largest beer events in the country, according to Greg Engert, the company’s beverage director — and the one who chooses the lineup for the festival. Proceeds from Snallygaster support Arcadia, NRG’s local food equity and sustainability nonprofit.
The tickets come in two tiers: the Kraken Pass ($65) grants admission from 2-6 p.m. with unlimited beer, wine, and cocktail tastings; the Basilisk Pass ($130) grants visitors access to the festival from 12-6 p.m., with unlimited drinks and amenities, including reserved bathrooms and shaded seating areas. The organizers are offering a free ticket for every 9 Kraken passes purchased.
Beers come in 4-ounce pours, with the exception of 16-ounce Bluejacket cans offered throughout the event. A full lineup of beers will be available closer to the festival on the Untappd app.
Feel free to bring the kids — there’s a family-friendly section with activities such as painting and temporary tattoos and kids under 12 get in free. (Tickets for children over 12 cost $10.)
Since parking near the festival’s location is difficult to find — entrances are at Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Third Street and Constitution Avenue NW — the organizers typically recommend taking a cab, rideshare, or Metro.
