Arlington County police officer William Hahn was arrested and charged for physically assaulting a woman while off-duty. Hahn, who is 34 years old and became a county officer in June 2020, is being held without bond and is on leave without pay.

The Arlington County Police Department says it responded to a report of an assault at around 5:08 p.m. on Friday. The woman was then taken to an area hospital to be treated for “serious but non-life threatening injuries” and has since been released.

The department says its investigation indicates that Hahn and the woman were “known to each other,” and that the assault followed an apparent verbal dispute at 800 S Scott St, where Hahn allegedly broke the woman’s phone. According to the department, Hahn then threw her to the ground and assaulted her. Later, the two had another verbal dispute in a residential parking lot at 2300 Columbia Pike, where Hahn hit the woman in the face. When they were waiting for an elevator shortly after, the reporting party saw the woman’s injuries and called an emergency number.

In a statement, Chief Andy Penn said the department is holding itself accountable “to the highest standards while remaining transparent to ensure the public’s trust.”

“I want to assure the community these serious criminal allegations reflect behavior that is unacceptable by any member of our agency and these actions are in direct contradiction to our role as professional law enforcement officers,” Penn said on Monday.

The criminal investigation into the assault is ongoing. Penn said the department will complete a “comprehensive criminal and internal administrative investigation into this incident.”

Hahn has a hearing scheduled for September 12.

Police department spokesperson Ashley Savage told DCist/WAMU that the internal administrative investigation will begin at the conclusion of the criminal investigation. Savage added that no further details on the incident are available beyond what the department gave in its press release Monday, “to ensure the integrity of these investigations.”

Arlington County’s independent policing auditor, Mummi Ibrahim, said she and the new community oversight board would be involved in the internal administrative investigation. Neither she nor the board would be involved in the ongoing criminal investigation.

This story has been updated to reflect that Hahn has a hearing scheduled for September 12, and with information from the policing auditor.
